Built for the tea race and one of the fastest ships of its time, it is preserved as a museum vessel in the town of Greenwich, United Kingdom. Launched in Dumbarton (Scotland) in 1869, Cutty Sark was dedicated in its early years to the tea race, trying to unite China and London in the shortest possible time during eight 'tea seasons'.
In the same year of its launch, the Suez Canal was opened, which made the route much shorter and gave advantage to steamers. It was possible to cross the Suez Canal for a sailboat, but it was difficult and expensive, conditions for sailing in the Red Sea are far from ideal. Later, it would be dedicated to the trade of wool from Australia, being the fastest boat on these routes during a decade, and it also would be used for the transport of goods between Porto, Rio de Janeiro,
